i wish i had a pensieve for this. anyway, i wasnt one of the early harry potter fans. im not even sure if i am a harry potter fan. i love the books, i love everything or mostly everything related to the books but im dont think im a hardcore fan to qualify as a "potterhead". i never heard of harry potter til i got a paperback copy of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets as a gift for christmas. one of my cousins gave it to me, unfortunately, i cant remember who. when they learned im not familiar with the book and they learned i havent read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, one of them quickly said i should not read it til i read the first book. i followed her advice, and she borrowed a copy of the first book for me to read. and after reading that first book, i knew i was hooked. ive never read something like it before. the books ive read back then were usually what my highschool teachers asked me to read. so, that was very boring, right? and also, ive always seen myself as a science fiction person and not someone who's into fantasy books. to a certain extent, that's still true, i prefer sci-fi than fantasy, but it seems harry potter was an exception. anyway, when i read the two books, i felt this was something i had to collect, so i started buying hard-bound versions. i was able to read the first two on paperback and was able to borrow a copy of the third book. that meant, i didnt have to open my hardbound copies. its like i was collecting action figures where one doesnt open them or else it wont me in mint condition. but they are books anyway, so i knew i will have to open them one of these days. anyway, point is, i took great care of these books. when one of my cousins borrowed it, and i saw there it was dirt-stained on its top pages, i was really pissed i took the book and didnt let her finish reading it. of course that didnt mean she did it, but i was certain i gave it to her without those dirt-stains.
anyway, i was so hooked back then that i searched the internet (with a dial-up modem) for harry potter goodies. i even changed my PC's sound scheme so that when i maximized or minimized a window or when i shutdown the PC, the PC would make use of the spells from the book (such as Wingardium Leviosa, Avada Kedavra, Expecto Patronum...not sure of the spelling). i remember on my sophomore or junior year in college, i went alone for the first time to go to Sta Lucia Mall to buy some Harry Potter pins. i filled my backpack with those pins. i didnt even think how to get home! also, michelle, a family friend, gave me a harry potter shirt as a birthday gift, which i still wear until today.
i still dont know why i wasnt able to buy the fifth book. i knew i just never had the will to save up money for the fifth book but why i never had that will to save money to buy the book, i dont know why. maybe i lost interest. and when i entered law school, the more i forgot about it. only when the fifth movie was about to released that i started reading the books again. and after reading books five and six, i realized i still like the books, maybe not as much as before, but i still like it enough that i would feel bad after reading the seventh book knowing that it would be the last in the series.
